A conversational interface is a user interface based on natural, turn-based dialogue, typed or spoken, rather than traditional visual controls like menus and forms, used in chatbots, voice assistants, and messaging-based product experiences across a wide range of industries and use cases.
Simple definition
It's any interface where the primary way of interacting is a conversation rather than clicking through a fixed set of visual controls. This includes both fully open-ended, free-text interactions and more constrained conversational flows that still rely primarily on dialogue turns rather than a traditional menu structure.
Conversational interface vs graphical interface (GUI)
A graphical interface presents fixed, visible options, buttons, menus, forms; a conversational interface presents an open or semi-open input, forcing the system to interpret what the user means rather than simply reading which button they clicked. This trade-off is fundamental: a GUI trades flexibility for predictability, while a conversational interface trades some predictability for a potentially much more natural, flexible interaction.
Where conversational interfaces show up
Conversational interfaces appear in customer support chatbots, voice assistants, in-app messaging assistants, and increasingly as the primary interface for entire products built around a chat-first experience. Some newer products are designed conversation-first from the ground up, rather than adding a chat layer on top of an existing graphical interface as an afterthought.
