The conversational assistant is a minority of a support system, and the rest is what takes the time.
The assistant itself
Connecting a model to a knowledge base and answering questions is genuinely quick and is what a prototype demonstrates.
This is the part that has become easy, which is why it dominates the perception of the effort involved.
Agent tooling
Everything a person needs to take over a conversation, see history, work a queue and hand over is a substantial application in its own right.
This is frequently omitted from build estimates entirely and is comparable in effort to the assistant.
Routing and queueing
Assignment, availability, concurrency, escalation and coverage hours are unglamorous and necessary, and none of them is trivial.
Teams discover these are needed after launch rather than estimating them beforehand.
Reporting
Resolution, escalation reasons, response times, sampling and quality review all require building, and without them the deployment cannot be improved.
Reporting is where build projects most often stop short, which caps everything that follows.
Knowledge tooling
Content management, versioning, review workflow and gap identification all need building or the deployment cannot be maintained.
This is invisible at prototype stage and becomes the constraint within months.
