Four measures are all called churn and can point in opposite directions for the same business.
Logo churn
The proportion of customers who left, regardless of what they were paying, which treats a large account and a small one identically.
Businesses with many small customers and few large ones report high logo churn while revenue holds.
Gross €evenue churn
Revenue lost from cancellations and downgrades, which weights by value and is the more meaningful figure commercially.
This is always at least as favourable as logo churn where larger customers retain better, which is usually the case.
Net revenue retention
Revenue from existing customers including expansion, which can exceed a hundred per cent while customers are still leaving.
A strong net figure can conceal a real retention problem masked by expansion in the accounts that stayed.
Involuntary churn
Customers lost to failed payments rather than to a decision, which is a payments problem and is frequently a meaningful share.
Separating it matters because the fix is entirely different from anything product or support can do.
