Each stage is distinguished by what the assistant can do rather than by which technology it uses.
No automation
Contacts reach people directly, with self-service limited to a help centre customers may or may not find.
This remains common in smaller operations and in sectors where the perceived risk of automation is high.
Content deflection
An assistant answers questions from documented content, resolving informational queries and escalating anything else.
This is where most first deployments land and where a substantial share remain.
Guided flows
Structured flows collect information and complete defined tasks such as booking or capturing a request, without deep system access.
This resolves more than content alone and stops short of doing anything to the customer's account.
Integrated resolution
The assistant reads and writes to core systems, which allows checking an order, changing a booking or issuing a refund within limits.
This is where the value increases sharply and where integration effort becomes the binding constraint.
Stages are not sequential in time
An organisation can sit at integrated resolution for one topic and no automation for another, which is normal rather than inconsistent.
Assessing per topic area is more accurate than assigning the whole deployment one stage.
