Starter rate is the proportion of conversations initiated by each origin type, most usefully expressed as visitor-initiated conversations divided by total conversations.
The origin categories
The useful categories are visitor initiated, where someone opened the widget unprompted, proactive accepted, where an invitation was responded to, and agent initiated.
Returning conversations, where a customer replies to something existing, should be counted separately since they are neither new engagement nor a fresh initiation.
Expressing the mix
The metric is more useful as a mix than as a single number, since knowing that seventy percent of conversations were visitor initiated tells you more than any individual rate.
Reporting the mix alongside absolute volumes prevents the misreading where a shift in proportion is interpreted as a change in demand.
Scoping by page and period
The mix varies enormously by page, since a support article attracts visitor-initiated help requests while a pricing page is where proactive invitations are usually placed.
A site-wide figure blends these into something that describes neither, which is the same limitation that affects every chat engagement metric.
