Three settings determine the reported figure and none of them describes customer behaviour.
The timeout threshold
How long a conversation must be inactive before counting as abandoned directly sets the figure, and thresholds vary widely between platforms.
A short threshold counts customers who stepped away and returned, and a long one counts genuine departures as still active.
Whether widget opens count
A visitor who opened the widget and never typed is counted as an abandoned conversation by some definitions and as no conversation by others.
This alone can change the rate by a large margin and is rarely stated.
Session loss versus departure
A conversation ended by page navigation or a session timeout is a technical failure rather than a customer decision.
Counting these as abandonment attributes a platform problem to customer behaviour.
Whether escalated conversations count
A customer who left while waiting for an agent is a different failure from one who left mid-automation, and blending them obscures both.
Queue abandonment is a staffing problem and mid-flow abandonment is a design problem.
