Five definitions are in common use and the same conversations can produce very different figures under each.
Containment
The conversation did not reach a person, which is the most permissive definition and the most commonly reported.
It counts abandonment, giving up and confidently wrong answers as successes, which makes it a measure of escalation rather than of resolution.
No escalation and not abandoned
Excluding conversations the customer left early is a meaningful improvement and still counts wrong answers the customer believed.
This is a reasonable minimum standard and is stricter than most published figures use.
Customer confirmed
Asking whether the answer helped, and counting only affirmative responses, is considerably more honest and is limited by who responds.
Response bias applies, since satisfied and dissatisfied customers respond at different rates.
No repeat contact
Checking whether the customer contacted again about the same topic within a window is the most reliable available proxy.
It requires identity resolution across the window and is worth the effort, since it catches the failures every other definition misses.
Verified outcome
Checking that the action the customer wanted actually happened is the strictest definition and is possible where the assistant took an action.
This is the only definition that does not rely on inference and applies to a narrow set of conversations.
